Pet Urine or Pet Odor Removal

Bad Puppy !!

We've all had to say this more than once or twice, right ? pet urine stains

I love my pets as much as the next person, but on occasion they can be a real pain in the carpet. Dragging in everything from the dirt and mud in the yard to the awesome trophy bird or vole they found out back. Add this to the pretty little pools of pet urine they make while we are not looking and those nice big gobs of drool (like my two labs) and voila, we have a new multi-colored carpet.

Now "WE" may be used to seeing these pet stains, or worse "Smelling" the pet stains but believe me , your friends and family are very aware that you have pet urine issues. We've just become tolerant of the odor and it does not affect us. These household pet odors can also spread to your clothing or carry bags and be brought along with you during your day. Have you ever smelled the cigarette smoke odor on your co-worker that just came back in from their lunch break ? YEP, while they don't smell it themselves, everyone else in the office does.

So you think you got little Fluffies pee spot all cleaned up right ? Here is a little test. You may also perform this test in an area that you suspect your pet has gone. Simply take a drinking glass and set it with the open end down on the surface of the carpet in the area of the suspected accident. Wait 5 minutes and raise the glass to your nose. Can You smell It ? What does it smell like ?

Some great advice is to ask advice. If you suspect your pet may have had some accidents that you didn't catch;  have a friend or neighbor come over and ask them if they can notice the pet odor. It is not as embarassing to ask a friend and be told it smells, as it would be to have someone suprise you and tell you your house smells like pet urine. And don't be ashamed by the issue as it is more common that you might guess.  The next step is to call a professional (Advanced II Carpet Care) to come and give you a free Pet urine and pet stain decontamination audit. As we pros are supplied with the best technology and training to identify the problem areas.

pet_stains_1.jpgMouse over the left photo for Before and After. This particular house had two female dogs. They continued to leave their marks until the homeowners decided they could no longer stand to live with the dark pet stains and the strong ammonia smell from decaying pet urine. Notice the stained areas are in the open, this is indicative of female dogs, as the male counterpart will leave his mark in corners, on walls and along the edges and legs of furniture. Simple deduction as male dogs like to lift their legs and the females will squat. Male territorial markings are more difficult to notice as they expel very little urine as opposed to fully relieving their bladders.

Below are some images of the process that Advanced II Carpet Care uses to remove pet urine smells and stains.

                        Step 1                                Step 2                               Step 3                              Step 4                             VOILA !!

pet stainsp3.jpgp4.jpgp5.jpgp6.jpg

Step one simply shows the places on the carpet that have been visibly changed by the pet urine deposits.

Step two, I mix the proper solution in 150 degree water. The solution is mixed into a gardening can so that it can be easily evenly applied to the affected areas.

Step three, the area has been saturated with the solution. Enough solution must be applied to penetrate to the subfloor. The product is then left to dwell for 30 minutes as the active enzyme digestors work their magic. The product I use also contains a special deodorizer.

Step four, here I use a special extractor, this unit helps to draw the moisture all the way from down in the subfloor. And finally the completed product, a nice fresh decontaminated carpet. (The dark spot on the right is a wear area at the pivot point of the room). Do it Yourself methods cannot compare to the deep cleaning provided in this method.

How to determine the potential urine deposits of your pet

 Pet Size

 2-6 Pounds

Chihuahua

 20 Pounds

Medium Dog

 50+ Pounds

German Shepard

Average Deposit  2 oz.  4 oz.  6+ oz.
 Number of times per day  x 2 minimum  x 2 minimum  x 2 minimum
Minimum deposit per day  4 oz.  8 oz.  12 oz.
 Days in a month  x 30   x 30   x 30
Number of Ounces per month  120 oz.  240 oz.  360 oz.
 Number of months in a year  x 12  x 12  x 12
Number of ounces per year  1440 oz.  2880 oz.  4320 oz.

Now if we divide by 128 ounces per gallon we can determine the amount of potential urine deposited by your pet in a year.

Pet 1-1440oz.= 11.25 gallons/year   Pet 2-2880oz.= 22.5 gallons/year   Pet 3-4320oz.= 33.75 gallons/year

Now that is a whole lot of pee pee. Not that our pets go on the floor all the time but the potential for what our carpets may hold can be scary. If you have read thru and made it to this point on the page you must be serious about cleaning your home and relieving yourself of your odorous pet issues. The next step is to give me a call.

115.4 million homes in the United States own pets according to the National Pet Owners Survey of 2007. I know they have all had a few pet accidents. Have these pet urine spots been taken care of professionally ? I don't get as many calls as I should because most people are afraid of what it may cost, but the cost of DIY cleaning can cause you to permanently damage your carpet.  How about  the associated costs of owning a pet . Let's take a look at being the proud owner of a new puppy.

Cost of Puppy

This can range from $50 through a shelter upwards to about $750 from a breeder (breeder prices will often range between $500 - $800 on average based on many factors and please know how to tell a reputable breeder over one who is not).

The First Year

  • 9 week puppy shots: $35 - $50 depending on vet
  • 12 week puppy shots: $35 - $50 depending on vet
  • 16 weeks rabies shot: $7 - $40 depending on where you go
  • Heartworm preventative: $40 - $100 per year depending on size of dog & type of preventative
  • Collar: $5 - $20
  • Leash:$5 - $20
  • Toys (puppies and dogs need a variety):$8 - $17
  • Various chews: $2 - $10ea
  • Crate: $25 - $150
  • Food: $15 - $30 (per bag for good, premium food - cost per year will vary based on dog)
  • Puppy Classes: $45 - $125 per session
  • Basic Obedience Classes: $45 - $125 per session
  • Spay/Neuter: $75 - $150 based on gender and size of dog

So depending on your individual expenses, you could easily spend $300 - $900 on your puppy the first year alone. You can easily exceed the cost of the pup you paid for. So, that cheap little pup you had to find is really not a cheap little pup!

Now as the little bugger ages, you can add in vet bills, bigger bags of food, puppy day care or kennel expenses. OMG that can range another $1000 bucks a year. So now if he lives 10-15 years, well looks like your precious little puppy cost you at least $10 - $15,000 dollars over his life time.

puppy_tree.jpg                       So how do we train or discipline our pets ?

Be consistent and fair in your corrections.
You must demonstrate to your dog that it can trust your orders. Do not ever correct the dog after the fact. Such corrections appear to be arbitrary and unfair to the dog, because it has no associative memory the way people do.
If your dog is still a puppy, socializing it is a good way to gain its trust.
Consistency can be a big challenge with a family: every family member must agree on the basic ground rules with the dog; when and for what it should be corrected, what commands to use and so on. Families must cooperate extensively to avoid confusing the dog. It is best if only one person actively trains the dog; thereafter if the commands are given the same way, everyone in the family can use them.

It is your duty for the next 1 year, every day and every hour to take him out , walk up to where you want him to pee/poo. To help speed things, go to the pet shop and buy a pee stake. These plastic stakes smell like pee to the pet. Drive the stake into the ground, in the area you want him to do his duties. He will be attracted to the stake and want to mark it, eventually your pet will go in the same area. Be sure to praise your pet say "Good boy" or "good toilet". It may take a few days for your pet to perform. But eventually he will. Be sure to give praise, praise and more praise. Don't use food to congratulate/reward him. Your voice is sufficient.

If you decide that some action requires correction, *always* give a correction when you see the action. Always use the minimum correction necessary. A sharp "No" or "AH-AH" will do. You don't punish him.
When you catch him doing it in the house, you pick him up gently, saying "No" firmly (do not get mad or angry) carry him out and put him outside the door then walk with him to the magic spot, repeating all your words and instructions as you walk to the spot.. then say "good boyyyy go pee"... praise as he finishes his duties.

After food you must do the same thing.
If he has not done anything when you have been outside for  10-15 minutes , come back in with him, then go out again 10 minutes later. Repeat all the instructions..walk up to the spot saying good boy let's go toilet, go wee, good boy well done.. even if he has not performed.
Take the time to accompany your pet to the stake or spot each time. It will take about 3 months for him to want to go out alone.
It will take a year for a puppy to be fully house trained.
You may also have to take him out 2 or 3 times a night.
So set the alarm.
When you are not home crate him, add the number 1 to your puppies age in months and that will give you a reasonable idea of how long a puppy can hold his bladder when properly trained.

Patience and love are needed to complete the task of house breaking.
